Self Biography:

I became interested in the martial arts as a child after watching Chuck Norris battle mystical Ninja Warriors in the martial arts classic movie “The Octagon”. Shortly after, I started studying Karate at a YMCA in my home town of Chesterton, Indiana. At the age of 10, I had no idea the path that I was embarking on and that martial arts would quickly consume my life. At the age of 13 my family was relocated to Birmingham, Alabama. Not being able to afford to train at a local dojo, my mother loaned me the money to purchase the “Bruce Lee’s Fighting Method” book series. I immediately noticed that the fighting postures, striking techniques, footwork and defensive movements seemed much more natural and direct than the Karate techniques that I had been studying. I read the books over and over.

Through a stroke of luck, I found a business card for a Jun Fan Gung Fu/Jeet Kune Do instructor named Sifu Lamar Davis II. I reached out to Sifu Davis and immediately started training under his instruction which would last for many years. I was already a huge fan of the Bruce Lee movies, so studying Bruce’s style of martial arts just seemed like the right thing to do. The direct practical nature of JKD appealed heavily to me and Bruce Lee’s Jeet Kune Do quickly became a lifelong passion of mine. From that time forward my interest in the original teachings of Bruce Lee led to training privately with Sifu Mark Turquit as well as training at seminars with Sifu Zee Lo, Sifu Jerry Poteet, Sifu Gary Dill, Guru Ted Lucay Lucay, Sensi Joe Lewis, Sifu Jerry Beasley, Sifu Ted Wong, Sifu Tommy Gong and Sifu Francis Fong.

In 1989 my brother Jim and I found a Classical Japanese Ju Jitsu dojo and began training under the instruction of Shihan Mark Barlow. The style was Akayama-Ryu Ju Jitsu and when we first started training there the classes were mixed with Judo and Ju Jitsu techniques. We learned really quickly that to be a completely well rounded martial artist, it was necessary to be able to fight standing and on the ground. That was a great experience and at that time Ju Jitsu had not been exposed to many people in the US like it is today, so it made us feel really blessed to be able get that instruction at that time in our lives.

In 1994 I was certified to teach Jun Fan Gung Fu/JKD under Sifu Davis as an Apprentice Instructor. Later that same year I moved to Charlotte, North Carolina and began studying Jun Fan/JKD, Muay Thai kickboxing and Phillipino Kali under the Tuttledge of Sifu Robb Kelly. Sifu Kelly was a full instructor under Guru Dan Inosanto and a Muay Thai kickboxing instructor under Thai boxing legend Ajarn Chai Sirisute. I found the Muay Thai and Kali training to be perfect compliments to the Jeet Kune Do, especially the weapons training from Kali. The need to understand how to fight with and against weapons is absolutely necessary if you are truly talking about developing a realistic plan for personal survival. This is also where my interest in firearms training was sparked.

I began attending firearms training courses and started shooting on a regular basis. During this period I also trained in Muay Thai kickboxing, at the prestigious Black Belt USA training center under Khun Kru Dan King and Dr. Ying King. I went on to earn my level 1 certification in Muay Thai kickboxing under the instruction of the Kings. I found Charlotte to be a Mecca of extremely talented martial arts instructors and I soon began training at the Scott Shields Martial Arts Academy, where I continued to improve my JKD, Kali, Muay Thai kickboxing and Ju Jitsu. Soon after joining, I started assisting with teaching the Jeet Kune Do classes at the Academy. I also received my blue belt in Jiu Jitsu with some help from training partner and good friend Sensei Mark Cukro. During this period I was also honored to attend training seminars with martial arts legends Guru Dan Inosanto, Ajarn Chai Sirisute, Sensi Rickson Gracie, Sifu Francis Fong, Sifu Larry Hartsel and Grandmaster Bobby Tobada. In 1998 I was authorized to teach Jun Fan/Jeet Kune Do under Sifu Robb Kelly, which I still consider this to be one of the proudest moments of my life. I consider it an honor to have had him as my Sifu and a friend.

In 1998 my passion for firearms started to grow. I soon earned my first instructor credentials from the National Rifle Association (NRA) and began working full time and teaching at Firepower Inc., which is a defensive minded gun store with an indoor shooting range and training facility in Matthews, North Carolina. While at Firepower Inc. I taught NRA courses, the North Carolina Concealed Carry qualification course, private lessons on pistol and shotgun for self defense. I also developed their Concealed Carry 2 course, which is a practical shooting course intended to be a follow up to the Concealed Carry qualification course.

In 2003 I moved back to Birmingham to be near my parents and younger brother who is now my Assistant Instructor. I have continued to research, train and teach the martial arts and practical defensive firearms skills. I worked for Hoover Tactical Firearms for over three years and for the last two years I was the Rangemaster, Firearms Training Programs Director and head instructor. During that time I provided training in practical firearms skills and tactics to civilians, law enforcement, private security and military personnel. I provided Prisim System Reaction and Judgement training for the D.E.A and several local law enforcement agencies. In December of 2013 I resigned from HTF and have been devoting all my time to the development of our Cutting Edge Personal Defense programs and our new line of Custom Concealment Gear ranging from all types of Kydex plastic molded products.
